Grande Prairie Composite High School is a grade 9-12, with 1400 Students and 108 staff. Our school originally opened in 1963 as the Grande Prairie Vocational High School. The school name changed to the Grande Prairie Composite High School in 1970 and in 2022 has now moved to its new location in a brand new building.

At Grande Prairie Composite High School, we believe in the transformative power of education. As a dynamic and growing school, we proudly serve over 1452 students in grades 9 to 12, with a dedicated team of 121 staff members committed to building a supportive and inclusive community. Located in the heart of Grande Prairie, a thriving northern city, our school is dedicated to unlocking each student’s unique abilities and potential. 

We are an evidence-based Professional Learning Community that fosters a culture of continuous growth and collaboration among staff and students alike. Guided by our vision to Ignite Potential and our Phoenix Mission to Educate, Inspire, and Empower, we shape confident, capable, and compassionate young people ready to excel in an ever-changing world. At Grande Prairie Composite, we don’t just educate; we partner with you—parents, guardians, and community members—because we believe in the power of working together to support student success. Our Learning at Grande Prairie Composite High School

Our school offers two programs of choice: Apprenticeship programming and the International Baccalaureate Programme. In addition, we offer a wide range of course choices for our students including, Career and Technology Studies, Registered Apprenticeship Program, Music, Leadership, Languages, Fine Arts, Skills Alberta, and Skills Canada participation. 

Our Wellness Centre provides various services to support students' social, emotional, physical, mental, and educational well-being. 

Rooted in the necessary foundations of meaningful relationships, relevant and engaging learning experiences, and effective communication, Grande Prairie Composite High School, is a community that strives to ensure students and parents are actively involved in setting the direction toward achieving success after graduation.  We are dedicated to making the transition to high school as smooth as possible.

Our School Education Plan is focused on:

Priority: Mental Health and Wellness of Students and Staff
Outcome: To support emotional well-being and mental health of students and staff.
Outcome: Increase teacher capacity in Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
Outcome:  Increase student engagement and resilience.


Priority: Being explicit about building the culture of the school with staff and students.
Outcome: Re-establish and continued focus on school culture and increased sense of community and participation.


Priority:  Target student needs using academic interventions, assessments and instruction.

IB world school logo

International Baccalaureate program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepare high school students for success at University and beyond. A full IB high school curriculum includes required courses in a second language, social studies, mathematics, and sciences with exams at the end of the two-year program. The Grande Prairie Composite High School is the first Alberta school north of Edmonton to offer an IB program.

Phoenix Logo

The logo features a phoenix rising from the name of the school. The phoenix is moving upwards to represent looking towards the future and rising to the occasion. The two spanned wings on either side of the phoenix represent strength and speed as they pull the phoenix up from behind the lettering.

The variety of programs and courses offered allows each student to pursue areas of passion while providing them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in a changing world. We are committed to the development of Alberta Education’s 21st century competencies - Engaged Thinkers, Ethical Citizens, and Entrepreneurial Spirit.
