About

Grande Prairie Composite High School is a grade 9-12, with 1400 Students and 108 staff. Our school originally opened in 1963 as the Grande Prairie Vocational High School. The school name changed to the Grande Prairie Composite High School in 1970 and in 2022 has now moved to its new location in a brand new building.

"We are proud to unveil our new school to our students, families, and the City of Grande Prairie. It has been a long time coming, and I am excited about this historic event for our students and the greater school community," says Dennis Vobeyda, Principal, Grande Prairie Composite High School.

The school offers spacious shops for senior trades, a theatre, state-of-the-art technology with touch screen interactive displays in each classroom, an oversized gymnasium, and many features that enhance student accessibility, such as Braille on classroom signage, which adds to the inclusive feel of the school.

Overall, there is an abundance of natural lighting, and the school is equipped with solar panels to generate partial energy for energy needs. The addition of the panels has given the school a Leed Silver certification.

The school's location and building are changing, but our commitment to student excellence and success remains. "We will continue to offer our Athletic Academy programming, and we proudly remain the only High School north of Edmonton to provide the International Baccalaureate Programme," explains Mr. Vobeyda.

Phoenix Logo

The logo features a phoenix rising from the name of the school. The phoenix is moving upwards to represent looking towards the future and rising to the occasion. The two spanned wings on either side of the phoenix represent strength and speed as they pull the phoenix up from behind the lettering.

The variety of programs and courses offered allows each student to pursue areas of passion while providing them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in a changing world. We are committed to the development of Alberta Education’s 21st century competencies - Engaged Thinkers, Ethical Citizens, and Entrepreneurial Spirit.

Principal's Message

Welcome to the Grande Prairie Composite High School! I am proud and excited that you have chosen our amazing school to complete your final years of public education. I am sure you are excited to embark on this journey and we are most certainly looking forward to being a part of Team YOU!

Grande Prairie Composite High School is a grade 9-12 school with a student population of approximately 950 and a staff population of 85. We provide excellent opportunities for students to expand their knowledge, meet new friends and achieve personal goals. Grande Prairie Composite High School offers two programs of choice; Senior Trades and the International Baccalaureate Programme. We feature a range of course choices and programs including Career and technology Studies, Registered Apprenticeship Program, Music, Leadership, Languages, Fine Arts, Skills Canada participation, as well as opportunities for students to become involved in athletics, leadership and community projects. We are proud to offer a Wellness Centre that offers a variety of services to support student's social, emotional, physical, mental and educational well-being.

Our Learning at Grande Prairie Composite High School

Our school offers two programs of choice: Apprenticeship programming and the International Baccalaureate Programme. In addition, we offer a wide range of course choices for our students including, Career and Technology Studies, Registered Apprenticeship Program, Music, Leadership, Languages, Fine Arts, Skills Alberta, and Skills Canada participation.

Our Wellness Centre provides various services to support students' social, emotional, physical, mental, and educational well-being.

Programs of Choice Offered at Grande Prairie Composite High School

The Academy where a passion for sport or fine art can positively drive a passion for education and character development. The goal is to integrate excellence in education, athletics, and positive character development in every day of our student-athletes’ educational experience.

International Baccalaureate program is designed as an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepare high school students for success at University and beyond. A full IB high school curriculum includes required courses in a second language, social studies, mathematics, and sciences with exams at the end of the two-year program. The Grande Prairie Composite High School is the first Alberta school north of Edmonton to offer an IB program.
